Election of Mayor.

To elect The Mayor for the ensuing year who will then make the statutory declaration of acceptance of office. This will be followed by a short adjournment for robing.

Councillor Johnson moved and Councillor Davis seconded that Councillor L S Lyons be elected Mayor.

RESOLVED

That Councillor L S Lyons be elected Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing year.

The Mayor signed the Statutory Declaration of Acceptance of Office.

Apologies for Absence.

Apologies for absence had been received from Councillors Ali, Boote, Bridgeman and Martin.

Urgent Business.

To consider any business which the Chairman rules may be dealt with under Section 100B(4) of the Local Government Act 1972.

Declarations of Interest.

To receive declarations of interest from Members and Officers in respect of any item to be considered at the meeting.

Due to the nature of the business being conducted at this Council meeting, it is not anticipated that there will be any declarations to declare.

5.

Mayor's Communications.

The Mayor will present a past Mayor’s badge to Beryl Hunwicks and a past Mayoress’ badge to Camilla Findlay.

The Mayor thanked Councillor Johnson and Councillor Davis for their kind words in nominating him for the position of Mayor, and the Members of the Council for their support.  Invitations for events had already been received, including an event being held on the coming weekend at Brookwood Cemetery with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as part of the War Graves Week.  In addition, the Mayor would be presenting the trophy at Woking People of Faith’s football tournament, being held on Saturday.  A Civic Service would be held later in the year, once it was safe to do so.

The Mayor took the opportunity to pay tribute to Beryl Hunwicks, who had served as Mayor over the past two years, representing Woking over an unprecedented time, attending a range of online events during the pandemic as well as volunteering at a vaccination centre.

The Mayor further thanked Councillor Hussain, who had served as Deputy Mayor over the past two years and was likely to continue in the role for the coming year.

The Mayoress

The Mayor was pleased to announce that Jen Sinnamon would support him as Mayoress for the coming year, and took the opportunity to thank her in advance for the support that she would provide.

The Mayor’s Chaplain

The Mayor advised that his Chaplain for the coming year would be Reverend Lucy Brierley, Minister of the United Reformed Church.

The Mayor’s Charity

The Mayor had chosen Woking Mind as the Mayor’s Charity for the coming year, recognising the invaluable support the Charity provided.

6.

Appointment of Deputy Mayor.

To appoint the Deputy Mayor for the ensuing year who will then make the statutory declaration of acceptance of office.

Councillor Whitehand moved and Councillor Barker seconded that Councillor Hussain be appointed Deputy Mayor.

RESOLVED

That Councillor Hussain be appointed Deputy Mayor of the Borough for the ensuing year.

The Deputy Mayor signed the Statutory Declaration of Acceptance of Office.
